Cheryl Studer (born October 24, 1955 in Midland , Michigan ) is an American opera singer ( soprano ).

Cheryl Studer studied at the Tanglewood Music Center , Tanglewood , and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Hans Hotter. After initial appearances in Darmstadt , at the Bavarian State Opera and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, she made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1985 as Elisabeth ( Tannhäuser ) , where she has since also appeared as Elsa, Senta and Sieglinde (in 2000). At the Salzburg Festival she sang Chrysothemis ( Elektra ) , in 1992 the Empress ( Die Frau ohne Schatten ) , the Marschallin ( Der Rosenkavalier ) , Elettra in Idomeneo and Leonore (Fidelio) . She has performed over eighty roles at major opera houses in Europe and the USA, including La Scala in Milan , the Opéra National de Paris , the Vienna State Opera , Covent Garden in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Hamburg State Opera . Roles at the Bavarian State Opera have included Violetta Valéry ( La traviata ) , Aida , Rosalinde ( Die Fledermaus ) , Chrysothemis (Elektra) , Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) and Ariadne ( Ariadne auf Naxos ) . In 1998 there was a scandal with the Bavarian State Opera, which terminated her guest contract without notice because her “current vocal condition” was “not up to the expected demands”. After her voice had recovered after a break, she sang in 14 more performances at the Bavarian State Opera until 2003.

Over the course of her international career, she has made numerous important recordings, including Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio under Bruno Weil and Richard Strauss’s Salome under Giuseppe Sinopoli. For example, the soprano recorded over 28 complete operas between 1987 and 1994.

From 2003 until her retirement in 2021, Cheryl Studer held a professorship for singing at the Würzburg University of Music. Today, she continues to teach private students.
