PROGRAMME
Marc-Antoine Charpentier
Sainte Cecile, vierge et martyreHenry Purcell
Hail Bright Cecilia, ode to Saint CeciliaMarc-Antoine Charpentier is the only composer of the Grand Siècle to have distinguished himself so remarkably in the genre of sacred history, producing more than thirty works, all conceived after his stay in Italy. From this exceptional body of work, Sébastien Daucé and Ensemble Correspondances have selected “Caecilia, virgo et martyr,” the first of these sacred histories dedicated to Cecilia, one of the composer’s most original sacred frescoes. The cult of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, also quickly spread across the Channel: Henry Purcell, like Charpentier, dedicated several works to her. The most accomplished, and probably the most appreciated since its creation, is “Hail! Bright Caecilia!” The juxtaposition of these two works here outlines the extremely strong and profound links woven between French music and the English repertoire in the 17th century.
