Twelve Years Later, the plot –
The one-act play Twelve Years Later is to be considered a true “sequel” to Cavalleria rusticana , of which it retains some fundamental traits: orchestral composition, the “Preghiera” , the “Stornello di Lola” , the “Brindisi” and the Intermezzo, composed in the key of F major. The action takes place in Sicily in the second half of the 19th century, at Easter, twelve years after the tragic story of Cavalleria rusticana , the day in which Compar Alfio is released from prison. Santuzza firmly rejects the attentions of her friend Pietro and, marked by the tragedy that has struck her, must provide for the care of Gna Lucia and Turidduzzu, her twelve-year-old son born from the relationship with Turiddu, and for this reason always mocked by his peers in the village. Zu Brasi, an old and wise family friend, is of great help to the family. Santuzza’s frequent quarrels with Lola, a pleasant woman who continues to show off her beauty, indifferent to the misadventures she has caused. Compar Alfio arrives in town without anyone knowing, longing for forgiveness. In a climate of redemption, which characterizes the end of the work, he will succeed in his intent.
