  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The Canto General is an oratorio for two solo voices, mixed choir and orchestra by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis based on texts from the poem cycle Canto General (“The Great Song”) by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda .

In contrast to the film score for The Invisible Uprising , Theodorakis does not attempt to imitate the South American instrumental sound in “Canto General .” Instead, he uses his own, socially motivated musical language, rooted in traditional Greek music , which is also expressed in the use of the bouzouki in the orchestra. The work is written in a simple, triad-oriented harmony and is captivating for its rhythm , which incorporates many models from Greek dances.

While the large texts of the Canto General can be viewed as the choirs of an oratorio and are particularly impressive due to their monumentality, the lyrical element predominates in the later completed, chorale-like smaller sections.
