ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Bach composed an exceptional collection of cantatas that can be described as funereal, particularly because their main theme is death. The presence of flutes, instruments associated with funerals, lends a distinctive character to these works, notably in Cantata BWV 8, with its expressive solo flute, and in Cantata BWV 161, typical of the genre. Tragic force is the hallmark of Cantata BWV 27. Light and salvation, however, always await the believer at the end of their journey, as seen in the serenity of Cantata BWV 95.
A leading Bach scholar, John Eliot Gardiner undertook an incredible Bach pilgrimage across Europe in 2000: his masterful, humane, and passionate interpretation became a landmark and continues to move audiences with its exceptional vision.
