ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

About the creation of this Cantata, André Mehmari states that this is his biggest foray into choral territory so far. Intimate, more chamber music movements that focus on vocal soloists alternate with moments where the choral writing is denser. The piano part is much more in support of the choir than a soloist, but he is allowed some creative liberties, as in the continua of a baroque piece. The clarinet, generous in its tessiture and dynamic range and sound richness, walks and flies over the entire musical discourse, making complementary comments as an extra chorus supervoice, expanding its palette of colors and gestures. Considered the forerunner of symbolism in Brazil, the poet Cruz e Sousa was born to manumitted slaves in present-day Florianópolis and had a privileged education, demonstrating a talent for letters from an early age. His work inspired and provided André Mehmari with the most varied affections, in addition to a rich cast of sonorous musicalities evident in his text.
Complements the program The Rainbow Rose, on a poem by Emily Dickinson, a work that approaches the modern madrigal for choir and piano. Once again, the piano fulfills the role of support and support to the vocal plot that mirrors Dickison’s imaginative and free text.
