ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
João Guilherme Ripper ‘s opera “Candinho ” was born from the intersection of two creative worlds: music and painting. Inspired by the legacy of Candido Portinari , the composer delved into his writings, drawings, and paintings to create a delicate and moving work, designed especially for young audiences.
The show takes on a new life on the stage of the São Pedro Theater , in a production by the Opera Academy , the São Pedro Theater Youth Orchestra , and the Novos Tons Youth Choir . The production blends reality and fiction to recreate Brodowski’s village, childhood games, and the first steps of the boy who would become one of Brazil’s greatest artists.
Among the plot’s characters is the clown Beringela, a central figure who consoles young Candinho after he misses the village’s only circus performance. This gesture of encouraging imagination and drawing becomes the symbolic starting point for the future painter’s artistic awakening.
In this production, Portinari’s own paintings take on a new dimension. His lines and colors inspire sets and costumes, transforming the stage into a living extension of his work.
João Guilherme Ripper’s connection with Portinari is long-standing and personal. The artist’s name has always been present in his family: a great-aunt of the composer was a student of the painter and assisted him on the panels for the Capanema Palace in Rio de Janeiro. Years later, in the 2000s, Ripper met João Candido, the artist’s son, during a visit to the Portinari Project—a meeting that led to a friendship and, later, the creation of this moving opera.
More than a show, Candinho is a celebration of childhood, memory and the creative force of two great names in Brazilian culture: João Guilherme Ripper and Candido Portinari .
