ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Cançó d’amor i de guerra is one of the most important zarzuelas in the Catalan repertoire, composed by Rafael Martínez Valls and with a libretto by Lluís Capdevila and Víctor Mora, premiered in 1926 at the Teatre Victòria in Barcelona.
This work is set in the historical context of the French Revolution, in the Roussillon area, in 1793, and presents an impossible love story between Eloi, a young worker, and Francina, the daughter of the forge owner. Through the music, Martínez Valls manages to fuse operatic influences with elements of Catalan popular music, including the sardana, in a work of great vocal and orchestral richness. The zarzuela was a resounding success, despite the political difficulties of the time, establishing a model for other composers of the time.
