Kaija Saariaho
Vista (Deutsche Erstaufführung) – Auftragswerk der Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker mit Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic und Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (26 Min.)
Béla Bartók
Herzog Blaubarts Burg Sz 48 (konzertante Aufführung) (60 Min.)

Works by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho are regularly on the programs of the Berliner Philharmoniker. After premieres in 2006 and 2009, the orchestra will present the German premiere of the orchestral piece Vista in this concert. The direction is in the hands of Susanna Mälkki, who is considered one of the best experts on Saariaho’s work and who conducted a successful production of their opera L’amour de loin at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

In tone color fantasy and symbolist musical language, Saariaho ties in with French impressionism, which also had a strong influence on Béla Bartók when he composed his only opera, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle. In his version of the gruesome fairy tale, librettist Béla Balázs leaves open whether Duke Bluebeard actually murdered his former wives or whether they symbolize the secrets of his psyche. Balázs described his text as a »ballad of inner life«.

Behind the seven doors that the eponymous hero opens at the request of his wife Judith, scenes stained with blood reveal themselves: a torture chamber and an armory, but also the Duke’s sumptuous possessions and a lake of tears. With great suggestive means and unsurpassable instrumentation, Bartók’s music describes a journey that leads from darkness into light and, at the end, back into dark night. Because in spite of her love, Judith Bluebeard cannot release his soul torment
