Embedded in a grand musical tribute to both the laureate and the founder of the prize, the 2022 Birgit Nilsson Prize is awarded to world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is present to accept the prize.
The award ceremony takes place in the presence of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Opera Choir under the direction of Patrik Ringborg and the Radio Choir under the direction of their chief conductor Kaspars Putniņš participate in the ceremony. As soloists, cellist Amalie Stalheim, sopranos Maria Bengtsson and Johanna Wallroth and Emma Sventelius, mezzo-soprano, take part.
