Siphokazi Molteno was the outstanding singer in the competition and without doubt outperformed the others in the finals. She is beautiful, a fine actress, her voice warm, rich and with an astonishing range. She can be both intense and tragic, and, as she proved in her Rosina aria, comic, with stunningly good coloratura. The audience in the hall gave her thunderous acclaim, which was thoroughly deserved. What possessed such illustrious judges to award the prize to the wrong singer? – one who has a lovely baritone voice, but sings the bass repertoire when he lacks convincing low notes, sang throughout almost exclusively in Italian, and although personable, engaging and good looking, has a long way to go yet before he is the stellar artist that Molteno already is. Shame on them! But she will have a great career despite their gigantic misjudgement.
