The special performance, which has been included in the repertoire of the Cluj-Napoca Hungarian Opera since autumn, deals with a legendary female figure and a historical period that is still controversial, in a style and genre-creating form.
A genre that crosses the borders of musicals and operas can create new paths in domestic musical performances: Péter Pejtsik’s symphonic sound world refines György Szomor’s intense, dramatic music with operatic depth. The script by Tibor Miklós rewrote the legend: at the center of the story is a woman besieged by jealousy and lust for power, the mother, wife, lover, who as the widow of Ferenc Nádasdy became the victim of a conceptual trial. Among the real historical figures, there is only one fictional character in the work, detective Walter, who traces the mysterious story of Erzsébet Báthory, who was accused of murdering young girls and was walled up in the castle of Ccejte.
Secret, jealousy, lust, eroticism, love and cruelty are simultaneously present in the story, which has served as the inspiration for numerous literary works and films – which was realized in Bertalan Bagó’s dynamic and powerful visual world on the Margaret Island Main Stage, with Péter Novák’s spectacular choreography, Rita Vereckei ‘s clean set, Borcsa Kiss with his contemporary and modern costumes.
