  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The opera “Baeksan An Hui-je” consists of four acts. Act 1 is composed of four scenes, Act 2 of three scenes, Act 3 of one scene, and Act 4 of two scenes, covering An Hui-je ‘s activities against the backdrop of Baeksan Trading Company and Balhae Farm . To aid audience understanding, subtitles are provided regarding the Declaration of Independence, the Korean Language Society Incident, and the background of the establishment of Balhae Farm. The main characters include An Hui-je , his friend Kim Won-bong , Hwang Ok (who attempts to capture An Hui-je but instead joins him in the independence movement), and the young man Min.

Min, a modern-day youth chasing the dream of striking it rich, happens to visit the Baeksan Memorial Hall in Donggwang-dong, Jung-gu, Busan , where he meets Baeksan Ahn Hee-je and travels back in time. Around 1914, Ahn Hee-je established Baeksan Trading Company alongside the Choryang Innkeeper and developed it into a nationwide commercial and trading enterprise. Later, he lived the life of a nationalist entrepreneur, establishing the Balhae Farm and using his economic power to participate in the independence movement. The story follows Min as he learns of the life of Ahn Hee-je— who lived as an independence activist, nationalist entrepreneur, educator, and journalist —and begins to view the world from a new perspective.
