ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
On the program:
Music of Johann Sebastian Bach
“Orchestral” Suite in D Major BWV 1068
Motet: Fürchte dich nicht BWV 228
The Dispute between Phoebus & Pan BWV 201In J.S. Bach’s Der Streit zwischen Phoebus und Pan (BWV 201), rustic humor meets divine artistry in a musical duel between the god of nature and the god of music. These paired movements — “Komm, Midas, sage du nun an” and “Pan ist Meister, lasst ihn gehn!” — capture the dramatic climax of the cantata, as Midas, sung by tenor Thomas O’Neill, delivers his ill-fated verdict declaring Pan the victor, earning himself the famous donkey’s ears in return. Originally composed for Leipzig’s Collegium Musicum, this secular cantata transforms Ovid’s ancient myth into a witty commentary on taste, style, and the power of art.
