Bach’s Messiah – Project of the Leipzig Bach Festival: Throughout his life, Johann Sebastian Bach reflected on episodes from the life of Jesus of Nazareth in his cantatas, oratorios and passions. In these works he created gripping musical images of the proclamation from the birth of Christ to the passion story, resurrection and ascension. “Bach’s Messiah” – the motto of the Leipzig Bach Festival 2021 makes you sit up and take notice. No, it’s not about an undiscovered oratorio by the great Thomaskantor, but about a musical marathon along a theological core. Johann Sebastian Bach has repeatedly set episodes from the life of Jesus of Nazareth in great music. In his cantatas, oratorios and passions he composed and interpreted the story of the Savior’s impact from the narratives of the New Testament: the announcement of the birth of Christ, the Christmas story, parables and miracles of Jesus and finally the story of the passion, resurrection and ascension. So one can certainly speak of Bach’s “Messiah”, only that it is not a single opus, but the central theme in Bach’s theological and musical oeuvre. Bach Festival director Michael Maul put together this cycle in 2021, which brought “Bach’s Messiah” to sound in twelve concerts on five consecutive days. It combines 33 selected cantatas, the St. Matthew Passion as well as Christmas, Easter and Ascension oratorios. The first squad of Bach interpreters took part in this Bach marathon, including Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Gotthold Schwarz, Václav Luks and his Collegium 1704, the RIAS Chamber Choir and the Academy for Early Music Berlin under Justin Doyle as well as the Lautten Compagney under Wolfgang Katschner.
