ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Synopsis
In December 1734, Christmas brought the Bach family of musicians together in Leipzig . There, the children Gottfried and Elisabeth met the older half-brothers Friedemann and Emanuel . Anna Magdalena , called Magdalena and the second wife of Johann Sebastian , supported her husband so that he could devote himself to his mission of bringing the divine closer to people through his music.
The Christmas Oratorio is to be finished on time. Bach’s alleged vanity has long been a thorn in the side of the city council and the church leadership, and they fear that “operatic” music will once again be heard in St. Thomas’ Church . Johann Sebastian hopes that the oratorio will make him a court composer at Dresden and expects the support of all family members.
However, there is a dispute between Johann Sebastian and his son Emanuel because the latter does not receive the recognition he wants from his father as a musician and Friedemann is favored by his father. Finally, the Leipzig City Council prohibits the performance of the Christmas Oratorio. The family tensions take their toll on ten-year-old Gottfried and he disappears without a trace.
