ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Program: J. S. Bach
Cantata “Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot”, BWV 39
Cantata “Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben?”, BWV 8
Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067The Collegium Musicum ensemble, under the direction of Oleg Romanenko, continues its ambitious project of performing all of Bach’s cantatas on historical instruments in the cathedral. The ninth season of the series builds on the idea of the previous one: listeners, along with the musicians, continue to follow in Bach’s footsteps in Leipzig and – 300 years apart – hear the great master’s sacred works, which transformed the city’s musical landscape and, ultimately, the entire future history of music. The 2025/26 season will feature cantatas composed during Bach’s years as cantor of St. Thomaskirche. Commentary by Roman Nasonov, a leading expert on early sacred music and associate professor at the Moscow Conservatory, helps listeners understand the meaning of Bach’s masterpieces.
