Atala, premiered in 1879 at the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara; is based on the novel by François-René de Chateaubriand, which tells the tragic story of an impossible love between two Native Americans, Atala, a Catholic, and Chactas, a warrior from the enemy tribe, the Natchez; Atala’s mother promises the virgin that her daughter will never marry if she survives and Atala defies her father to save Chactas’s life from the death penalty; is influenced by bel canto and classical operas such as ” La Traviata” , which is presented in Italian , the predominant language in 19th century opera. This work was lost and was recovered.
