“In As One, the two voices, Hannah after (mezzo-soprano) and Hannah before (baritone), share the role of a single transgender protagonist. The opera focuses on the inner journey of the protagonist and her personal discovery process, avoiding falling into hackneyed stereotypes. Hannah is just a person trying to find her identity and her place in the world. This three-part opera comprises 15 musical numbers, chronicling Hannah’s experience from her youth in a small town, through her college years, to ending with a trip abroad, where she begins to understand more about her identity. . As One is one of the most performed operas in North America today, and has been gaining wide recognition in the international art scene. Musically, this work presents various soundscapes, masterfully describing each of the moments that the protagonist goes through, going from lyrical and exuberant vocal lines to fast passages with hints of atonality, going through sections with minimalist overtones. The current theme of the opera, accompanied by the music and visual effects of the staging, guarantees not to leave the public indifferent.”
