Composed in 1706 amid the turmoil of the War of Spanish Succession, Apolo y Dafne is a mythological zarzuela with a twist: it was written not by one composer, but two. Sebastián Durón, maestro of the Royal Chapel under Felipe V, composed the first act, while Juan de Navas — celebrated harpist of the Royal Chapel and one of the leading voices in Spanish stage music — composed the second.
The story begins with the people of Thessaly, terrorized by the monster Phyton. When the god Apollo defeats the monster, the people abandon their devotion to Cupid in favor of Apollo — sparking Cupid’s fury. Caught in the fallout are the nymph Dafne, who is haunted by a premonition of her own fate, and Apollo, who falls for her despite her mistrust. Cupid takes revenge by shooting enchanted arrows that twist love into jealousy and heartbreak throughout Thessaly. Meanwhile, the comic servants Lizeta and Rústico add some lighthearted relief to the chaos. Will the gods reconcile, and what becomes of Dafne? Watch to find out!
