In the opening scene we are introduced to a lovely Victorian tableau, as if photographed by Lewis Caroll, pen-name of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), the Oxford mathematics lecturer, author and talented photographer. Roderick Williams paints a vivid
portrait of each of Caroll’s much-loved characters, reinforced by stunning
costumes, based on the original Tenniel drawings. As the plot unfolds we
meet the pompous Mouse, doddering Dodo, mad March Hare and Hatter, vicious
Queen of Hearts (“off with their heads”) and all the others, played by a cast of 36 girls
aged 10-17, from schools in and around Oxford. This show has something for everyone. Like the original story, it can be taken as light entertainment or as an intellectual game.
