In 2021, the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky was celebrated. The figure of the prince is of great importance for the historicity of Russia, because he laid the foundations of the very existence of Russia for a long time, and the coming anniversary is called upon to become an event capable of awakening a special spiritual upsurge in society.
The feature film by Sergei Eisenstein “Alexander Nevsky” was released on December 1, 1938 and immediately won tremendous success. The music for the film was written by Sergei Prokofiev, and the success of the film prompted the composer to write a cantata based on the music for the film. It was necessary to completely re-orchestrate all the music, since the previous orchestration was designed for the use of electronic means used when recording film music, various effects associated with the approach and removal of one or another instrument from the microphone, etc. In addition, from disparate fragments that sound throughout the film, it was necessary to compose harmonious sections of the vocal-symphonic cycle.
