Antônio Francisco Lisboa, known as Aleijadinho, was born in Ouro Preto (then Vila Rica), in 1738, and died there, in 1814. Despite the illness that disfigured his body and compromised his feet and hands, the artist produced an impressive work of international repercussion, in which the 12 prophets stand out in the churchyard of the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Sanctuary, in Congonhas do Campo.
Aleijadinho was a contemporary of the Inconfidência Mineira, a separatist revolt against the exploitation of the colony by the court of Portugal. The movement, as is known, was discovered and suppressed, its participants deported and Tiradentes, its leader, hanged and quartered.
For the opera, composer Ernani Aguiar – who clarifies beforehand that he is not concerned with artistic innovations – wrote tonal music, with elaborate compositional craftsmanship and an inspired melodic vein. Eventually, between acts or scenes, Ernani included beautiful interludes that recall old serenades or modinhas from Brazilian music.
