The story unfolds in two acts: in the first, the characters show themselves in their best light, while in the second, everything goes into a spin and the masks of propriety fall… with humour. “There is no subliminal message behind, no moral! It’s quirky, it’s just for fun! insists Gerard Cachau. “If there is a message, this is it! agrees François Mascali, faithful stage and music director of Les Turlupins. This time, he left a large musical part to Gérard Cachau, who wrote the libretto of the sung comedy, where situations and songs, drawn from the large pool of tunes from one-act plays by Offenbach, follow one another: the latter, performed by accordionist Rémi Briffault and pianist Stella Juliachs, illustrate the former.
Offenbach will also be on stage, since Gérard Cachau has painted a caricature of it, surrounded by two toonesque creatures, in the slightly crazy spirit of the play. The portrait could well be used again next year: we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Jacques Offenbach and the Turlupins will surely be up to something…
