  The Story
  Act I
  The shadow of Thyestes returns from the underworld, recalling his crimes. Deceived
  by his brother Atreus, he devoured his three children and then, on the advice of an
  oracle, fathered an avenger with his own daughter. He now urges this very avenger,
  Aegisthus, to fulfil the will of fate. Having already killed Atreus, he is now to kill the
  latter’s son Agamemnon. The sun rises. Aegisthus confirms: the hour has now come.
  Act II
  Agamemnon’s wife Clytaemnestra has doubts about the plan she and Aegisthus
  have devised to kill Agamemnon upon his return from Troy. However, she brushes
  aside the objections of the Nutrix (nursemaid). After ten years of absence, she is no
  longer bound to Agamemnon. Moreover, he sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia to
  the gods and is now returning accompanied by the seer Cassandra. When Aegisthus
  encourages Clytaemnestra to carry out the planned deed, she wavers once more. She
  now defends Agamemnon and insults Aegisthus on account of his lineage. Aegisthus
  defends himself and continues to press for the murder. Clytaemnestra resolves to stay
  on the path they have set out on together.
  Act III
  Eurybates reports that Agamemnon has indeed returned. However, the fleet has been
  almost completely destroyed. He elaborates upon the storm that engulfed them. Over
  the lamentations of the captive Trojan women, Clytaemnestra orders festivities and
  offering.
  Act IV
  The Trojan women lament humanity’s inability to die with equanimity as well as the
  loss of their homeland. Cassandra appears exhausted and disillusioned in the face of
  her fate. She is overcome by a vision. She predicts great danger to Agamemnon as
  he arrives. Agamemnon orders his servants to keep watch over her and enters the
  palace.
  Act V
  Agamemnon is slain in the palace. Faced with her father’s death, Electra resolves to
  await her enemies with calm and composure. Clytaemnestra and Electra engage in a
  bitter verbal duel. Clytaemnestra demands the surrender of Electra’s brother Orestes.
  Electra declares his being hidden in a safe place. Clytaemnestra threatens Electra
  with death. Aegisthus, as the new ruler, orders Electra to be banished and imprisoned.
  He does not grant her the death she asks for. Clytaemnestra orders the execution
  of Cassandra, whom she accuses of having taken her husband from her. Cassandra
  accepts the verdict with equanimity. She predicts madness to befall her murderers.
