ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The four-act opera Adel i Mara is one of the most important works of the Croatian composer Josip Hatze. The romantic epic Bijedna Mara about the unhappy love of two young people, written by Luka Botić from Split, is the basis of Branko Radica’s opera libretto. A handsome young man, the Turk Adel, and a young Christian Mara from Vranjice see each other and fall in love at the village fair. But the gap between the two communities is too deep for the love of two young people to overcome. The sources for this touching love story come from the 16th century, when in 1574 the Duke of Split sent the Venetian government a report on the entire event. Luka Botić found the report in the Split archive and used it for his epic. The clash of different faiths in a disunited environment leads to a tragic end, giving the composer Hatze the opportunity to dedicate himself to the folk music of two different areas of Dalmatia, the Mediterranean Split and the city of Klis, which were then under Turkish rule.
Broad melodic lines, sung arias and dramaturgical tension make the opera Adel i Mara one of the most brilliant works of domestic opera creativity. Although the first performance of the opera took place in Ljubljana in 1932, the work premiered on the stage in Zagreb the following year under the direction of Lovra pl. Matačić soon came to life on other Croatian stages. Hatze, a student of the great Italian composer Pietro Mascagni, showed with this opera a distinct sense of drama and the nuances of all the characters, and the conflict of faiths and worldviews of two neighboring communities, which is refracted through two young people, is shown in the spirit of reconciliation and tolerance. The Opera of the Croatian National Theater premiered this work, continuing its artistic mission of staging the best domestic opera works.
