ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
A Noite de São João is the first Brazilian opera sung in Portuguese and with a national theme. It was composed by the Italian composer Elias Álvares Lobo for the Imperial Academy of Music and National Opera, the first concrete initiative in Brazil to stimulate the development of the genre in the country. The opera premiered in Rio de Janeiro on December 14, 1860, with the illustrious presence of Emperor D. Pedro II. The libretto was written by writer José de Alencar and tells the story of secret love between Inês and Carlos. Inês’ father, a notary, plans to send his daughter to the convent. Carlos, devastated, decides to join the Army. On Saint John’s night, she asks the saint for help to resolve her love affair. Then a gypsy appears, who promises to change the fate of young lovers. From the opera A Noite de São João , only the reduced score for song and piano survives, the original orchestration of which has been lost. In addition to publishing the original piano reduction, the historical importance of the opera justified the hiring of maestro Mateus Araujo to develop a new orchestration, in order to make it possible to perform the opera in its original format, with an orchestra. Through a partnership between Sinos and the Dr. Carlos de Campos Dramatic and Musical Conservatory, in the city of Tatuí, the pioneering opera by Elias Álvares Lobo was heard again after more than a century of silence. The re-premiere took place at Teatro Procópio Ferreira, on December 6, 2022, under the direction of maestro Emanuele Baldini and the scenic direction of Rosana Orsini.
