ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The multicultural show “1823 – A Ópera da Liberdade” exposes the political, military and social history of the Bahian War of Independence from the arrival of the Governor of Arms Inácio Luís Madeira de Melo in Salvador on February 15, 1822, until his departure of the same on July 2, 1823. The events are referred to through the songs of the Indigenous Group “Os Guaranis”, the texts of the actors (Maria Felipa de Oliveira, etc…), the songs of the heroes (lyrical soloists), the songs of the people (Adult Choir and Children’s Choir) and the choreographies. The narrative construction persists in a process identical to that observed in the traditional performances carried out by the “Os Guaranis” Group: the hybridizations and miscegenation of elements from European, African and indigenous origins. The goal is to present a live show, based on the dialogue between high culture and popular culture and between different cultural groups on the island. The originality of the proposal lies in the fact that it created a historic ballet opera, a true popular opera where the island people tell their own story. The opera is a tribute to our ancestors who, in 1823, were responsible for the independence of Bahia, a conquest of the people that united men, women, Indians, blacks and whites. It was a struggle for the right to decide their future, the first step towards the establishment of a democracy, on a land where, until that moment, only the arbitrariness and brutality of the colonizer had existed.
